Procedure Text: Definition, Purpose, Language Features and Example

A procedure text is a type of writing that describes how to do something. It is written in a step-by-step format, using simple present tense and imperative sentences.

The purpose of a procedure text is to instruct the reader on how to complete a task. It typically includes the following four components:
  • Objective: The desired outcome of the task.
  • Materials: The items needed to complete the task.
  • Method: The steps to be followed in order to complete the task.
  • Evaluation: How to determine if the task has been completed successfully.
Procedure texts are often used to instruct readers on how to do things like cook a meal, fix a car, or play a game. They can also be used to explain how to use a machine or appliance.

Here are some of the linguistic features of procedure texts:
  • Simple present tense: This tense is used to describe actions that are happening now or that happen repeatedly.
  • Imperative sentences: These sentences tell the reader what to do. They often start with the words "first," "next," "then," and "finally."
  • Time-related linking words: These words are used to show the order in which the steps should be followed. They include words like "first," "then," "next," "after," and "finally."
  • Detailed instructions: Procedure texts provide detailed instructions on how to complete the task. This includes information on what materials are needed, what steps to follow, and how to know when the task has been completed successfully.
Here is an example of a procedure text:
